Hello all new members and friends!
We at Children's hope are very happy to see so many new members and friends from all over the world. It is largely thanks to the Internet that we have been able to reach out to so many.
With so many new interested and involved people, we would like to introduce our organization and activities a bit more. Children's hope is a Swedish, religiously and politically independent humanitarian NGO that helps vulnerable children around the world. The organisation is based on Christian values, that all men are born equal. Our work is founded on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which includes devotion to the best interests of the child, the right to life, survival and development, respect for the views of the child and with respect for the dignity and worth of the individual regardless of gender, language, religion, origins, ability, race, colour, opinion or birth status. We welcome members, staff and friends from all nationalities, regardless of religious or political affiliation, but as an organization, we take no position.
Our main operation is currently in Reni, Ukraine, where we run a rehabilitation centre for vulnerable children. The home is called Novy Dom, meaning "the new house". In Novy Dom children and adolescents live in family-like conditions, for varying periods of time, depending on their family circumstances and needs. We have a street team that wanders the streets during evenings, nights and weekends and help children and young people with everything from getting home after having locked themselves out, to contacting the police and social services when they detect cases of maltreatment and abuse. During the winter, they hand out sandwiches and tea to the children, both in the streets of Reni and the surrounding villages. In the summer when it's hot, they hand out clean drinking water. We also have a children’s helpline called CTC. The line is open for children and teenagers to call and talk about anything between heaven and earth. Our staff has received calls from teens who are unhappily in love to victims of sexual abuse. Every week, we distribute food parcels to extremely poor families with children. At the beginning we could only help five families, today, thanks to contributions from members and sponsors, we can help nearly 30 families with food parcels each week.
Children’s hope in Reni works closely with local social services, juvenile police, schools and others working with children and adolescents. It has taken time to build up the trust that we have today, both among agencies and individuals, and in the beginning, it was mostly an uphill battle. For us it has always been important to have the various authorities on our side and to work for a good dialogue and good cooperation, because without it, it would be almost impossible for us to have the activity that we have today.
We have a dedicated staff at Novy Dom who all work in the child's best interests. For them it is more than just a job, it's a life, and together they have become a tightly knit, effective team… a family.
Would you like to help us in our work? There are many ways for you to get involved. For example you could become a Novy Dom sponsor, then, your support goes directly to children in Novy Dom. Becoming a sponsor is something that we like to see as a long-term engagement where you donate a sum of money (minimum 20USD) each month for at least one year. You can also join in and help poor families by donating some money for food parcels (30USD - for the small and 60USD for the large). We also have regular fundraisers for various activities that we arrange for the children, including summer camps and Christmas presents, but also medical aid to be able to care for seriously ill children.
